Original Gouache Edwin Willard Deming Indian Warriors
Original gouache on artists board of Indian warriors in flight: A nocturnal forest scene by Edward Willard Deming, circa 1895-1920. Condition: VG. Exact size framed: 16 by 20 inches. Exact window opening: 7 by 10 inches. Old ownership tag affixed to rear of board in small window, "To be returned to Helen Deming". Edward W. Deming: Born:1860 in Ashland, Ohio. He Died in 1942 in New York City. In his lifetime he was a noted Painter, sculptor, and illustrator of Native Americans and Southwestern Scenes. He received his training at the Art Students League and abroad in France. He spent a year in Paris where he studied with the French masters, Boulanger and Lefebvre. Deming often portrays Native Americans in his works, reminiscent of his youth, where as a child, he had played with Sac, Fox, and Winnebago Indian children in western Illinois. After his first trip through the American West in 1887; visiting the Pueblo Indians in the Southwest, and the Umatillas in Oregon; His interest in Native American subject matter grew. By 1893 he was collaborating with fellow artist DeCost Smith on illustrating the customs and ceremonies of the Sioux and Crow Indians for Outing Magazine. After marrying his wife, they moved out West to paint and raise their six children. He eventually relocated his family to New York where Deming collaborated with his wife to write and illustrate a series of children’s books. Deming died in New York City in 1942. This Particular work is from the private collection of his daughter Helen Deming. It is characteric of his work in subject matter and technique, and is unusual in respect to the nocturnal scene represented. The subject matter is very surreal with the Indians and trees lit only by moonlight. One can almost hear the sound of their footsteps. Fine Art. Gouache on Board. Native American. Southwest Art.
